Welcome to the world, little Calvin James. It’s been three weeks since we brought you home and you’ve brought nothing but joy into every day…
For reals though. From my delivery to the moments here with him, Boden, Trevor and Smalls — my boys, our complete family — it’s been bliss.
There’s so much to be said about the difference between going zero children to one vs one child to two. You’ve already transitioned to the identity of being a parent. You feel empowered by knowing what the experience is like. There’s so much more comfort and calmness and this time around all I want to do is cozy up in our downstairs apartment and gaze into his eyes. It’s also our last so there’s a sweetness in savoring all of these moments — especially knowing how fast they go.
The meeting between him and Boden was priceless (watch the video here). The innocent phrases that came out of Bo’s mouth: “He’s out!” “Mommy can I see your belly?” He’s so tiny!” “He’s so cute!”… I melted. And though he’s had some hard days realizing Cal’s definitely taking up our time (he’s basically tied to my hip when feeding), watching Trev bond with Bo more has been a whole experience in itself. I’m just exploding over it all…
Smalls at first was like, seriously? Again? And after my horrible surgery nonetheless?! But after a day or two of keeping his distance, he assumed the big brother role immediately — guarding him and protecting him. Always sitting on the floor near him or between Cal and I. Always joins us in the bathroom for showers, sitting next to the bouncer. It’s adorable.
Week one was a bit of a fog as he wanted to be held vs being swaddled in his Snoo but that was okay by me. His sweet cuddles got me through sleepless nights. He was cluster feeding which was essentially feed after feed for days upon days, but the pro side is my milk supply is way up!
Week two was a breeze — made it to 3-4 hour chunks at night which made Trevor and I feel alive again. We got out for a few lunches with our little Cal Pal and he just slept the whole time in his carseat.
And then we hit the last week — week three — which was a bit of a doozy. Trev and I caught a cold and little Cal grew more on the fussier side, which led us to believe he wasn’t feeling good either. We went back to 1-2 hour chunks of sleep at night but see a clear on the horizon!
Overall, Calvin’s demeanor so far is chill. He’s extra calm when there’s music playing and people around. He’s a sleepy little cub and most definitely loves his buddy, Hobbes.
We can’t wait to watch your personality unfold, little Cal.
You know we love you so… watch a little video here.
