Personal style. It’s verrry interesting.
Especially when you realize it’s somewhat a direct result of your environment at a given period of your life.
Case in point : this year marks ten years of me living in Seattle — and there’s no way I can overlook the fact that this beautifully grey, ever-changing city has had a direct impact on my style…

I remember almost 20 years ago (yikes), when my dad started pitching to my family that he wanted to move us across the country from Illinois to Washington…
I was d e v a s t a t e d.
Not only was my life drastically going to change, but the closest “big city” that I’d have within reach was Seattle — which from all the things I had heard and read, sounded really effing depressing.
I’ll never forget our first visit — 14 year old Cortney, road tripping with her parents, exploring the great state of Washington, listening to the Boyz II Men Evolution album and crying, as she looked out the window to vast rolling hills and small freaking towns in Eastern Washington, all the way to Seattle, where it was rainy and kinda grungy.
I didn’t get it — why would anyone ever want to leave the Chicago suburbs? Why was I getting punished by having my big city options dwindled down to grey Seattle where the streets smelled of sea and the people dressed outdoorsy?
Well — fast forward to now and I can’t imagine life anywhere else. Seattle has become a place I’ve built my life in. It’s a booming city that I’ve been growing with — and that’s been growing on me — and I really am thankful for its effect day over day.
The wet, yet green as hell landscape.
The grungy, yet full of character city.
The grey, moody — and stellar for photos — sky.
And if you’re really in love with the city and place that you live in, it’s only fitting that you let your style reflect that. Like a New Yorker dressed in head-to-toe street style or a LA Cali gal flaunting cutoffs and a tan. Own your style, and own where you live.
So if you’re to your environment as I am — specifically in Seattle or in another grey, a bit rainy, yet beautiful city — here’s how to achieve the look during the cooler months.
Cozy, monochromatic — and you.
