The clean movement has officially gone mainstream. More and more people are doing their part to learn about the products they use on the daily. Reading labels. Doing research before purchasing. Conscious consumerism is a thing and I’ve got to say, I’m so here for it.
As I attempt to do my part with educating and slowly transitioning the assortment of products I use to clean, I wanted to share with you the brands I’m discovering and finding success along the way. This first post within my “Journey to Clean” series will be focused on beauty products for the skin, as accumulated from Follain.
When it comes to food, we’ve thankfully become smarter knowing to steer clear from products with labels like ‘sugar-free’ and ‘fat-free’, as they essentially signify harmful additives. But what many consumers don’t seem to realize, is labels on beauty products such as ‘natural’ and ‘organic’ can also be very false.
Unlike the pharmaceutical and food industries, the personal care industry isn’t regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. As a result, brands can get away with labels that don’t necessarily match their contents. And since there’s no legal or universal definition for the term ‘natural’, what that means to a consumer might be something completely different to the manufacturer.
All of this is what stirred founder Tara Foley to create a blog turned brand that would take a stand against toxins in personal care products. I first learned about the Follain brand Follain was born in 2013 as the first retailer to sell the best in clean beauty. The company tests thousands of products and requires brands to go through a strict approval process to ensure its customers can have access to truly, non-harmful skincare.
Since it’s launch, Follain has opened up several stores around the country in Maryland, Massachusetts, Texas, New York and — lucky for us, Seattle, Washington. I’ve made it a point to visit Follain Seattle often as the staff is SO informative. They provide a free personal skin consultation and suggest what products you should start with. They also host a variety of educational events where you can learn more about the clean beauty space and brands within. I attended one a few weeks back where I got to hear Tara speak and chat with her afterward. I was so inspired by her story and how she’s managed to come so far over the years as an individual — all the while becoming a mom.
In an effort to transition my skincare products entirely to clean, I try to leave with a new product after each visit to the Follain Seattle store. What I recently realized was that my routine finally consisted of all clean.
Sharing the products I’ve been using and loving by the brands approved and vetted by Follain.
