Baby, baby baby…. did we have a fun gender reveal party!
When Trevor and I learned we could find out the gender of our baby as early as 13 weeks, we knew we had to take advantage. Though it was a little overwhelming when we were given all of the options of tests we could take – from blood work to ultrasound to invasive vs non-invasive — we ultimately decided chose an option that was luckily covered by our insurance and would allow for us to check the health of the baby and sex at an early date from a simple blood test.
So crazy!
I made an appointment for a five minute blood draw at our hospital and was told I’d get a notification in their app about two weeks later with the results. We were ecstatic! The fact that the gender of our baby would be pinged to us on our mobile devices seemed insane — almost as insane as us deciding to wait to open the results for two extra weeks after we received them so we could have all of our close friends and family at out home for a gender reveal party… ????.
Just kidding. So worth it.
Sharing the details of how we unveiled the news below!
Trev and I are open books. When we learned we were pregnant, we spent a couple of hours by ourselves taking in all of the emotions, but then realized we couldn’t keep the news from our immediate family, so ended up calling our parents and siblings together that night. They were beyond excited.
So when it came to learning out the gender of Baby B, we knew we wanted to share the surprise with the ones we loved, capture the moment to look back on later and have some fun with it. Once I took the test, we reached out to make sure everyone was available on a weekend in January for a reveal party of some sort, and then we had a date to work towards for planning the big event.
Trev and I were trying to keep it original. I spent countless hours trying to get inspired online and as all I could find was confetti popping, colored smoke and the cutting of baked goods. Don’t get me wrong, these are all so adorable, but we just wanted to so something that felt more personal to us. Though this gem was a hilarious option.
To keep it fun for those attending, we thought it’d be perfect to host a “Hip Hop Brunch” — a concept we borrowed from one of our favorite restaurants down the street that’s a fun spin on your standard boozy brunch. We’d invite some peeps over, cook up some yummy breakfast bites, serve bubbles and play hip hop beats — a tradition we started years ago that’s been a fun excuse to get together on a Sunday.
The trick was involving our french bulldog Smalls somehow, because well let’s be honest, he was the first love of our life and our first born. We contemplated having him jump out of a cake somehow, which felt a little too complicated, and then remembered how adorable the little dude looked in hoodies. So, after doing a quick search on Amazon, I found a brand that made pet hoodies in every color — ordered one pink and one blue — and then decided we’d have Smalls run out to one perfect hip hop song with one color on. We involved our siblings in the fun. Trev’s sister Mikelle and her fiancé Marcus were in charge of opening up the results in our app and putting the right hoodie on Smalls before he ran out to everyone, my brother Dillon would be in charge of taking pics and my other brother Donny would be in charge of the video.
The event couldn’t have been better — and we are so grateful that all of our friends and family took time out of their weekends to be there for the moment. We played an epic playlist, sipped mimosas (I sipped on other sparkling bevvies), enjoyed one amazing brunch spread that our families helped contribute to and then once everyone ate, we gathered in our living room for the big moment.

And the moment captured in photos —
OH BOY! Trevor and I are so excited for Baby Boy Bigelow to join our family this July! Smalls doesn’t even know what’s about to hit him… but we know he’s going to be one hell of a big brother, that’s for sure. I will never forget how quickly he ran right to me once he had that blue hoodie on. It was the cutest moment and still makes me smile big.
